事情的背景
On the fourth floor of an office building, a night-shift staff member experiencing prolonged standing and a remote designer with a fixed on-site schedule twice a week disagreed on the priority right to use the only old ergonomic chair with good lumbar support in the rest area. Both faced varying degrees of muscle fatigue and back pain due to their job characteristics.
发生了什么
The staff member was extremely fatigued after 12 consecutive hours of standing work and used the chair for rest at the fourth-floor workstation. Subsequently, the designer returned to the workstation and found the chair usually used was occupied, feeling surprised at first. The staff member believed the other party's computer stand and other equipment placed daily might excessively occupy public space. A verbal dispute occurred between the two in the pantry. Afterward, they chose to clarify differences through mediation and discuss reasonable resource-sharing plans.
Stated an actual physiological dependence on the lumbar support of the chair due to high-intensity computer design work. However, upon seeing the other party's extreme fatigue caused by long-hour shifts, advocated a willingness to show understanding and agreed to share or yield the chair in a flexible, effortless manner.
Stated an urgent physical need for a comfortable chair for brief rest and recovery after 12 consecutive hours of continuous standing. Although having reservations about the way the other party's equipment occupied space, advocated against unnecessary workplace friction over a piece of office furniture, and supported adopting a rotating or shared resolution mechanism.
调解如何展开
During the mediation process, the mediator guided both parties to shift their focus from the "ownership" of the specific chair to each other's physiological health needs and the maintenance of friendly relations. The mediator assisted both in sorting out the differences in their work schedules, helping them realize that due to their respective job characteristics, both faced back pain caused by prolonged sitting or standing. On this basis, workplace empathy between the two was stimulated, and an elastic negotiation mechanism during overlapping time periods was discussed.
最后的结果
Both parties finally reached a friendly settlement. They agreed that during the rest period after the staff member's long night-shift hours, priority should be guaranteed for them to use the ergonomic chair for recovery; the designer expressed understanding and voluntarily yielded. As an unspoken understanding of settlement and reciprocity, both also reached a "coffee truce agreement," where the designer would bring a cup of coffee for the other party the next day, restoring a relaxed and harmonious relationship.
